Natural materials from the Amazon
Tagua and Acia are beautiful natural materials from the South American rainforest. They are the seeds of the fruits of the palms of the same name that grow in the Amazon region. The fruits are harvested by the indigenous people. Selling the seeds to jewelry makers is an important source of income for them.
Acai: superfood and bead
Acai berries are small round fruits that grow in large clusters. They resemble blueberries in color and size and have been considered by the indigenous peoples for centuries as a superfood that makes you strong and healthy.
Acai berries have very little pulp; the core of the fruit makes up 60-80% of the fruit. This core, which is actually a seed, eventually becomes a bead. These seeds are first peeled, cleaned and polished. A hole is drilled in them and then they go into a dye bath with environmentally friendly dyes.
The seeds are formed by nature and therefore no two Acai beads are exactly the same in shape, size and color. They also all have a black spot, which is their birthmark.
Tagua, or vegetable ivory
Tagua seeds or nuts are much larger than Acai seeds. They grow in large fruits with a hard, spiny exterior. The mature seeds are dried in the sun, which can take up to two years, after which they are rock hard. They can then be processed very well and can be cut and sawn into different shapes. Dyeing makes the veined structure of the vegetable ivory even more visible. This gives each piece of jewelry a unique natural look.
In composition, tagua looks exactly like animal ivory. That is why tagua is also called vegetable ivory. Moreover, tagua is also a good alternative to animal ivory. A tagua palm produces as much ivory in one year as an average female African elephant.
