WE MADE is the result of the stay of 2 young, talented Dutch Designers Rixt Reitsma (Rietveld Academy Amsterdam) and Lidewij Spitshuis (Design Academy Eindhoven) with the Indonesian Fair Trade organisation Apikri. They worked for three months together with local crafts people at the isle of Java. The main goal of this project was to develop a new collection of interior and fashion accessories that matches the western taste and that would find their way easier to the European consumer. Or in other words: Dutch Design meets Fair Trade.

This project is initiated by Dutch Design in Development (DDiD) and MoreThanHip; DDiD uses the expertise of Dutch Designers to help small producers in developing countries. In this way their products have a better chance on the European market. MoreThanHip, importer of sustainably designed and produced Furniture and fashion accessories, is worldwide distributor of the WE MADE collection.

During their stay at Java the designers were inspired by different craft techniques that they came across. They were also inspired by the people and street scene of Java and of its traditional Indonesian and colonial Dutch architecture. Elements of these influences are to be seen as specials details in the products.
