Eco leather with rough look & feel
The wallet is made from semi eco leather. Also known as bovine leather that is tanned with 50% less chemicals. It has a beautiful rough look.
Fair production in Colombia
The Wally is hand made in Bogotá, Colombia, in a studio that works according to Fair Trade standards and offers people at the bottom of society a chance at a better life.
Carnaza, or semi-eco leather
The MoreThanHip ecoleather collection is made in Colombia made of ecologically responsible 'semi-eco leather’. This type of leather is locally known as 'waxed carnaza'. Carnaza refers to the applied layer of skin and waxed to the finish of the leather.
50% less chemicals
The semi-eco leather is made from the hides of cows who have spent their entire life outdoors. These skins are split into two layers. Carnaza is the skin's lower layer, which is much softer and smoother than the top layer. As a result, less than 50% of the chemicals are needed to tarnish the leather than in the regular tanning process, in order to create a strong and sustainable leather.
Water-based paint and organic wax
The carnaza leather is dyed with water-based dyes and finished with an organic wax that is rubbed manually in the skin and then ironed with a warm press. The wax therefore drains into the skin and forms the outer layer. The end result is leather with a natural, lived appearance that will only be more beautiful in use and will have a suede-like look and feel.
Fair production according to Fair Trade standards
The workshop where the MoreThanHip collection is made is located in Ciudad Bolivar. This is one of Bogota's most dangerous neighborhoods, where there is high unemployment and drugs and violence are the order of the day. This studio was founded in 2001 by Doña Rosa, after the leatherwork company, where she worked for 16 years, had gone bankrupt. Meanwhile, the studio already has more than 25 employees. Due to this success, Doña Rosa has become a role model for the women in her neighbourhood.
New opportunities in the slums
The studio offers people at the bottom of society a chance of a permanent job. They are trained and have a better existence with normal working hours, a local wage and health insurance.
