Why is tagua also called vegetable ivory?
Tagua is the fruit of the tagua palm tree, which grows in the tropical regions of South America. The ripe seeds or nuts are dried in the sun up to 2 years, making them hard. Compositionally tagua looks exactly like animal ivory. That is why tagua is also called vegetable ivory. Moreover tagua also a good alternative to animal ivory. A tagua palm produces in one year the same number of ivory as an average female African elephant.
The tagua seed can then be cut into different shapes and forms. It is also possible to dye the seed in a variety of different natural colours. This process reveals the structure and veins of the pure cellulose material giving each piece an individual aspect and a natural look.
