Aura Que: English design made in Nepal
AURA QUE creates a range of stylish contemporary accessories manufactured by the Nepal Fair Trade Group to increase ethical production in the developing country of Nepal. Each AURA QUE design is brought to life in a Nepalese factory that employs local people affected by disabilities, providing an income for themselves and their families according to fair trade principles. All products are individually hand crafted, which may result in slight variations. The unique story behind each AURA QUE product enhances its charm!
Designer Laura Queening incorporates local materials wherever possible, such as high quality 100% Buffalo leather that is a by-product of the food industry, traditional woven cloth, handmade brass fittings and banana yarn. The banana fibre yarn is 100% natural, and produced sustainably from the pruned excess outer layers of the Banana tree after each fruit harvest in South Nepal.
AURA QUE accessories appeal to both the fashion conscious and the ethically aware consumer, through the use of contrasting materials - such as luxurious leather and naturally dyed yarn and fabrics - to create high quality contemporary products.
AURA QUE was established in 2008 by Laura Queening, following the success of her graduate collection at the prestigious Drapers Awards. Laura decided to take the opportunity to develop AURA QUE accessories which are manufactured according to IFAT fair trade guidelines, to promote ethical production and fair trade principles in developing countries. AURA QUE works closely with IFAT recognized manufacturers to ensure healthy and safe work environments, and payment of fair prices. We also encourage trade for small Nepalese family businesses and aim to build long term relationships with these suppliers, under the same fair trade principles.
Laura decided to focus on fair trade production in Nepal, having lived there in 2003 when she taught English in a rural school in South Nepal for five months. Living with a local family, she soon became totally immersed in the Nepalese community. The launch of AURA QUE has enabled her to combine her passion for design with ethical principles. All AURA QUE materials are sourced in Nepal and created directly in the country with local producers, in conjunction with The Nepal Fair Trade Group.
Through this work, AURA QUE works with the Nepal Leprosy Trust, an organisation which provides employment and support for people affected by disabilities which may otherwise lead to their segregation from the community. With regards to design and creativity, Nepal has a great wealth of natural materials and traditional crafts, and the work of the Nepal Fair Trade Group ensures a great base for ethical production
